Firefox hogging your system memory ( Windows )

If you are using 256 mb RAM , then using Firefox as web browser might slow down your PC. Wants to know why?? Run Firefox and lanuch Taskmanager ( Ctrl+Alt+Del ) , note the mem usage by Firefox. Now put your PC idle for 10-15 minutes and again note the same. Quite surprising !! Firefox eating your RAM. Firefox memory consumption is a big problem.

Firefox is programmed to cache objects for future use. In addition, memory becomes fragmented as memory is repeatedly allocated and deallocated. So the memory increase is normal. What to do? Switch to Opera which release memory when it is minimized. When you restore it, it just grabs what it needs. But if you still want to stick with Firefox then here we are discussing some tricks to solve this.

1. Run Firefox.
2. Now type “about:config” in the address bar and hit enter (not the double-quotes)
3. type “config.trim_on_minimize” into the Filter field. May be you won’t have this preference but we should check first.
1. If you DO have the preference, make sure it is set to true.
2. If you do NOT have the preference, then add it
1. Right click anywhere in the preference list then select New -> Boolean
2. Set preference name “config.trim_on_minimize”.
3. Select true for the value
4. Close Firefox and then reopen it.

Now you can recheck the memory usage with Taskmanger. Happy Browsing!!
